Gaming Session: Minecraft, September 30, 2010

(Image from Nik Daum.)

If your Twitter/Facebook/blog reader feeds are anything like mine, you’ve probably been inundated with Minecraft comments over the last couple of weeks; so we’ve decided to give it a go this week.  Specifically, we’ll be playing Minecraft Alpha, which is available here for purchase on Windows / Mac / Linux.  For those who, like me, are new to the game, Matthew Gallant has written a beginner’s guide to Minecraft which seems like it would be useful.

We thought it would be fun to meet on a multiplayer server; does anybody want to volunteer to host that? We’ll use Skype for conversation, please send a contact request to davidcarlton if you’re not already on my contact list. We’ll meet this Thursday (September 30) at 9:30 EDT / 6:30 PDT.

  1. I’ll be there, and am really looking forward to it!

  2. Travis Megill says:

    I’d be happy to host!

  3. Oh boy, this will be fun! Hopefully there won’t be too much lag, the online multiplayer is still a bit rough.

  4. Looking forward to it!

  5. Travis Megill says:

If anyone wants to hop on the server early to test things out, the IP address is 74.129.5.54

I’ll keep it running continuously, so let me know if you have any trouble getting on.

  6. Harlan Broughton says:

This gives me the excuse I’ve been looking for to try out the game. Was going to offer the use of my server but I’m glad to see that that is already covered. I’ll definitely try to be there

  7. Ben Abraham says:

Hey, so I’ll try and make it to this one (Love Minecraft sooo much!) and I was going to suggest coming to my server for a visit. It’d be interesting because there’s already so much stuff built, so it’d have a very different (and more exploratory) dynamic than a blank-slate server.

My IP is this: 115.64.88.104 and I usually only put the server up on request.

  8. Brian Creeden says:

I’m really looking forward to this. The combination of Reach and Civ V has absolutely crippled my free time, but VGHVI is a great reason for me to (finally) explore Minecraft.

It seems like we’ll have a great group, too! Thanks for offering your servers, guys.

  9. Let’s start on Travis’s server, but I definitely support checking out Ben’s server at some point as well: I think it would be really interesting to contrast the two.

  10. Travis Megill says:

Actually, my server is at 74.129.6.176 now. My IP must have changed. Who knows, maybe it’ll change again before Thursday :-p

  11. I’ll be there. I take it we start with Travis’ server and go from there. Always like it when I can join in.
